Official or not
Rust's in-game Official tab against everything elseOfficial servers are the ones in Rust's in-game Official tab: Facepunch's own and its partners', such as RustSpain. Rust Wipe Stats keeps that list by hand, by hostname and address. Everything else is a community or modded server.
Every player on a public Rust server at this moment, summed from what each server reports every five minutes. This page shows the running total, the last day and the last months, then breaks the same population down by game mode, modded or vanilla, group size, gather rate, region and how recently the server wiped. A small number of servers carry most of the players. Below the figures you can see how few, and which.

How the players split
Every server online is counted once in each breakdown, so each one adds up to the 95,504 players on 11,825 servers.

Asked of the forecast desk
What does the live player count cover?
It covers players on public Rust servers that report themselves to the server list. Servers that hide from the list are not included. The figure refreshes every five minutes and can move sharply around wipe days.
How does this compare with Steam's numbers?
Steam counts every copy of Rust that is running, including players in menus, loading screens and on private or unlisted servers. This page counts only players on public servers, which is what allows the split by server type below. The two figures measure different things and will not match.
When during the day are most players online?
The population peaks in the European evening, UK time. In UTC that is roughly 18:00 to 21:00. The quietest stretch is usually the early morning in Europe, which is evening in Australia and night on the US east coast.
Do modded servers hold more players than vanilla?
Modded servers hold more players in total, mainly because there are many more modded servers. The live split above shows the current balance and moves as servers report. For rankings by type, see the modded and vanilla server lists.
