Rank is players over the last seven days. A big server showing offline while the rest are up is that server restarting or wiping, not Rust being down.
The verdict, then the figures
Our reading of the full Rust server list gives the answer above. It goes out every five minutes, so the verdict is never more than a few minutes old.
The test is simple. We compare the current count of servers and players with what is normal for this hour of the day. On a quiet Tuesday morning the number is low; on a Thursday evening after a wipe it is high. A reading at or near the usual level means servers are up. A reading close to zero means an outage on Rust's or Steam's side.
Read it like a forecast
A small dip is normal. Servers restart one by one, and a busy front of wipes passes through on Thursdays and force wipe days. A dip that settles back within the hour is weather. A drop that stays down, and takes the biggest servers with it, is an outage.
The 48-hour charts below show the shape of the last two days. Look at the line for this hour yesterday. If today is sitting where yesterday sat, servers are up and behaving as usual.
Is your server down, or are you?
One server missing from your list is not an outage. Its own page shows when it was last seen, and whether it is restarting, wiping or gone quiet. If the list is empty in your game while this page says servers are up, work through Steam first: restart Steam and Rust, clear your server browser filters, and check Steam's status. On force wipe day, update the game before you try again.

How do you decide whether servers are down?
We take the whole public server list and compare it with what servers and players usually number at this hour. At or near the usual level, servers are up. A sharp drop across the biggest servers points to an outage. A single server missing is that server's own business, not an outage.
My game shows no servers but this page says they are up. What now?
Then the gap is between you and Steam rather than with Rust itself. Restart Steam and the game, clear any region or tag filters in the server browser, and check whether Steam is down. On force wipe day, update Rust to the new build before searching again.
